The wise words of Ike Turner
Sometimes we can find wisdom in the most unusual places, especially in metaphoric form. In one of the most brutal scenes in “What’s Love Got to Do With It” a cocaine fueled Ike Turner said,
God damn Ann. What the fuck you doing in there? That ain’t what the fuck you’re supposed to sing. Now I know you know better than that… I want to feel this mother fucking song through my skin. You’ve got to give it up. I want you to bring it up from way in here (points to crotch). You better put some stink on this mother fucker. You better sing this song like your life depends on it. How many times do I have to tell you this? You wrote the song and now you can’t remember the words. Ain’t nobody gonna buy this unless you sing how I know you can sing it… You’re going to keep singing it, until you get it right.
As an entrepreneur, I must use my inner Ike Turner to motivate me when I am feeling tired, stressed, overwhelmed or just “not in the mood” to do work that is vital to my success. Not only do I need to do it, I need to put some “stink on it” because ain’t nobody gonna buy my products and/or services if I don’t get it right.
In life we often plan out a series of goals (write the words to our song) and forget them or perform them with a lackluster effort. For example, in college I had the opportunity to network with great minds, learn from experienced and knowledgeable professors and read from texts in which I would not normally be exposed. However, I chose the “microwaved” educational route. I put in just enough effort to make it through. I did not have that inner Ike at that time motivating me to get it right.
I hope next time you are feeling “not in the mood” your inner Ike smacks you and tells you to “sing this song until I can feel it through my skin.” What do you think?
